Carquinez Strait II

Completed in 1958 by American Bridge, the Carquinez Strait II project consisted of fabricating and erecting a 3,350′ box chord truss bridge with two 500′ anchor arms, two 1,100′ main spans, and a 150′ central tower span. The bridge weighed 15,211 tons of steel, with each main span containing a 433′ suspended span weighing 1,096 tons. Erection involved falsework towers, cantilevering, and traveler derricks. This is the second Carquinez Strait Bridge, following the 1927 bridge, and was seismically upgraded in 2002. In 2003, the 1927 bridge was replaced with a new 3,465′ suspension bridge.
