Completed in 1927 by American Bridge, the Carquinez Strait I project involved erecting 3,350′ of back-to-back steel cantilevered through trusses, including two 1,100′ main spans and all approaches. A center pier was built on bedrock 150′ below the water. The structure was unified to resist earthquakes, allowing limited movement for thermal changes. A second, wider bridge was added in 1958.
