Bois d’Arc East Fork Trinity River Tunnel – Segment E

Completed in 2023 by Southland Contracting, the Bois d’Arc East Fork Trinity River Tunnel – Segment E Project consisted of numerous individual components that must be orchestrated concurrently to collect, treat, and transport water from the first major reservoir to be built in Texas in nearly 30 years to 80 different North Texas communities. The major components consist of a reservoir dam and raw water intake, raw water pump station, raw water conveyance pipeline, various roadway, and bridge improvements, environmental mitigation, terminal storage reservoir, high service pump station, water treatment plant, and treated water pipeline. The pipeline portion of this project will be constructed in two phases. The first phase of work consists of approximately 35 miles of 90-inch transmission main to transfer water from the newly constructed reservoir to a terminal storage reservoir in Leonard, Texas. This portion of the alignment is contained within Fannin County. The second phase of work consists of approximately 25 miles of 84-inch pipeline to convey potable water from the newly constructed Leonard Water Treatment Plant to a terminal connection near McKinney, Texas, within NTMWD’s existing regional water system. Segment E of this project involved the construction of 2,534 linear feet of 10-foot excavated diameter tunnel using four-flange liner plate and lined with 84-inch steel carrier pipe. There are two shafts: a 30-foot inside diameter (ID) launch shaft with four-flange liner plate and ring beams in overburden and a 25-foot, 9-inch ID receiving shaft with four-flange liner plate and ring beams in overburden. The tunnel is being driven through Austin Chalk with a double shielded, open-faced, gripper type machine with articulated steering.
