Completed in 1997 by American Bridge, the Boeing LC 17B Modifications project involved retrofitting mechanical systems for hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, helium, and propane tanks and piping. New concrete acoustical and flame deflector tunnels were built, and structural modifications to the Mobile Service Tower and Fixed Umbilical Tower were made for the revised Delta III rocket design. American Bridge also performed tasks like removing platforms, lighting, and structural steel work. We used innovative methods, including two simultaneous crews working from the middle to avoid interference. Despite a month-long delay due to damage at nearby pad 17A, the project was completed by accelerating work on cryogenic piping and structural steel and closely coordinating with subcontractors. In the final months, design changes required adjustments to acoustical ducts and the addition of a water suppression system, which were integrated within the project timeline.
