Completed in 2010, the BNSF Bridge Rehab – Mermentau River Project consisted of the repair of a deficient swing span bridge over the Mermentau River in South La. The bridge needed stabilizing as it was swaying when trains passed over it. Some wood piling became unstable because of scouring causing the deep-water bridge to sway. New 36-inch steel piling, add pile jackets, new steel bent caps as a crutch bent, replace structural steel beams and floor joists. Environmental considerations were a concern as well. All work from barges and this work was performed in windows of time while keeping the mainline open.
