Completed in 2001 by Johnson Bros. Corporation, the Atchafalaya River Bridge Reconstruction project consisted of the replacement of the center lift span on mainline bridge over the Atchafayla river. Very tough conditions with deep water, strong currents, tidal fluctuations, and working within windows of time daily dictated by the Railroad in order to keep the mainline open for trains and being able to open the bridge for marine traffic. Scope included completely rebuilding the 275 linear feet long center lift span of the bridge. Completely razed and replaced all ties, beams, bolts, bent caps, plates, shives, rollers & bearings, drove new 54-inch coated piling 150 foot long, erected 5 new bent caps assembled to the new piling under the existing bridge and jacked into place and bolted the new cap to the pile. Eventually dismantled existing deteriorated caps.
