Arthur Kill Railroad Bridge

Completed in 1959 by American Bridge, the Arthur Kill Railroad Bridge is a 558′ vertical lift bridge—the longest of its kind at the time. The 2,000-ton span was assembled on Staten Island and floated into place. Supported by 214′ towers, it provides 135′ of vertical clearance and includes a 13-span plate girder approach. The nearly balanced counterweight system allows the span to lift 104′ in two minutes using electric drives. American Bridge served as the superstructure contractor.
