SR-5 over Earman River Bridge Emergency Declaration: October 18, 2017 structural failure caused an 83,000-pound section of the bridge sidewalk and barrier wall to break away from the 6-lane bridge and fall into Earman River. In response, the FDOT closed the Earman River channel and bridge sidewalks and placed the bridge in a 3-lane configuration, resulting in major traffic delays on SR-5. 10-Day Emergency Contract to clear the channel and reconfigure the bridge to accommodate sidewalks and four lanes of traffic: The project consisted of installing a full bridge detour, saw cutting & removing seven 36,000-pound sections of the bridge, removing the section in the channel, installing 950 feet of barrier wall, installing pedestrian fences, and re-stripping SR-5 to allow four traffic lanes, two bike lanes, and two sidewalks. Utility coordination with Florida Power & Light.
Johnson Bros. successfully opened the bridge and sidewalks on October 29, 2017, 45 Hours after the detour was installed (11 hours ahead of schedule). The schedule had been complicated by a forced shutdown of operations for 12 hours during the detour due to Tropical Storm Phillippe passing directly over the project site.
