Completed in 1982 by Mole Constructors, the McDowell Tunnel Extension project entailed the construction of 10,800 linear feet of 102-inch tunnel employing a 102-inch Lovat Tunnel Boring Machine. The tunnel was unsupported and unlined, passing through Cooper marl at depths ranging from 60 feet to 85 feet.
